Vila Real de Santo António: Motorhome Parking and Things to Do
Vila Real de Santo António is the Portuguese town directly across the Guadiana from the Spanish town of Ayamonte. It was designed and built in five months in 1774 by the Marquis of Pombal — the same minister who rebuilt Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. The grid plan and the central square are among the best examples of 18th-century Portuguese urban design.
The Pombaline town centre
The Praça Marquês de Pombal is the centrepiece — a black-and-white wave-pattern mosaic square with an obelisk. The surrounding streets are uniformly 18th century. Come in the morning before the day-trippers from Spain arrive.
The ferry to Ayamonte
A regular ferry crosses the Guadiana to Ayamonte, Spain, every 30–60 minutes. The crossing takes 15 minutes. Ayamonte has better seafood restaurants than VRSA and is worth a half-day. The ferry takes pedestrians and cyclists only — leave the motorhome in VRSA.
Motorhome parking
The riverside area south of the ferry terminal has space for motorhomes with overnight permission. There are also two designated aires — one near the stadium, one near the southern entrance to the town.
Alentejo Park is 15 minutes (12km) from here.
