Tavira is regularly described as the most complete small town in the Algarve. The description is accurate. It has a Roman bridge, a Moorish castle, 36 churches, a morning fish market, a lagoon island beach, and a food culture that has not been entirely destroyed by tourism.
The town
The Roman bridge over the Gilão river is pedestrian-only and connects the two halves of the old town. The castle gardens are free and have views over the tiled rooftops. The fish market runs from 7–10am most mornings. Don't miss Pastelaria Tavira for coffee and almond pastries.
Ilha de Tavira
A barrier island beach 2km from the town, accessible by ferry from the quay (April–October). The beach is 11km long and almost entirely undeveloped. The water temperature in the Ria Formosa is several degrees warmer than the open Atlantic.
Motorhome parking
The riverside municipal motorhome area has 40 spaces with electrical hookup and dump station. Booking in advance in summer is recommended. In winter it is rarely full.
Alentejo Park is 25 minutes (22km) from here.
