The Ria Formosa is a 60km barrier island lagoon system running from Manta Rota west to Ancão near Faro. The eastern end — accessible from Tavira, Cacela Velha, and Manta Rota — is the quietest and least developed section.
Cacela Velha
A small cliff-top hamlet with views directly down onto the lagoon and barrier island. One café, a small church, and the ruins of a fort. The access road is narrow — larger motorhomes should park at the bottom of the hill and walk (10 minutes).
The bird life
The Ria Formosa is one of the most important wetland bird habitats in the Western Palearctic. Spoonbills breed here. Little egrets, grey herons, and various wader species are year-round. Flamingos and avocets from October to April. A telescope is useful but not essential.
By water
The Ria Formosa is best understood from the water. Kayak and stand-up paddleboard rental is available from Tavira and Olhão. The lagoon is sheltered and the tides are mild — suitable for beginners.
Alentejo Park is 20 minutes (18km) from here.
