The Portuguese-Spanish border crossing at Ayamonte/Vila Real de Santo António is the main crossing point for motorhomers travelling between the Algarve and Andalusia. Here is what to know.
The crossing
The A22 bridge over the Guadiana is unmanned. There are no passport checks or document checks for EU nationals. Non-EU nationals should carry passports as both countries are Schengen area and theoretically any crossing point could be checked. In practice, checks on this crossing are extremely rare.
Speed cameras and road rules
Spain has different motorhome rules from Portugal. The maximum length in Spain is 12m (same as Portugal). Speed cameras are more frequent on Spanish motorways. In Spain, you must carry two warning triangles and a reflective vest.
Currency and payments
Both countries use the euro. Card payments are accepted almost everywhere in both countries. Spanish fuel prices are generally 3–7 cents per litre cheaper than Portugal.
First night in Spain
Ayamonte has a municipal motorhome area near the ferry terminal. If you are heading towards Seville, the next practical stop is the Huelva area. See the Seville → Algarve route guide for the route in reverse.
Alentejo Park is 15 minutes (12km) from here.
