Snowbird Winters in Portugal: A Practical Guide for Motorhomers

Every November, tens of thousands of northern European motorhomes cross the Spanish border into Portugal. The phenomenon is called snowbirding: leaving the cold and dark for the mild Portuguese winter. The Algarve receives the largest concentration, but the Alentejo and the Silver Coast also see significant numbers.

What to expect from a Portuguese winter

The Algarve winter is mild but not warm. Daytime temperatures in January average 15–17°C. Nights drop to 8–12°C — cold enough to need heating in your motorhome. Rain falls mainly in November through February, usually in short, heavy bursts rather than sustained drizzle. There are typically 15–20 rain-free days in January. The landscape turns green in November, which is the payoff for the brown August. Almond trees flower in late January and February — the most beautiful month in the Algarve interior.

Monthly rates

Most licensed stopping places in the Algarve offer reduced monthly rates from November through March. Rates typically range from €300 to €500 per month, depending on facilities. Alentejo Park's winter rate is €420/month. At this rate, five months of winter costs roughly the same as a week in a hotel.

Community and social life

Snowbirding has a significant social dimension. The communities that form around popular winter stopping places — particularly in Lagos, Sagres, and the eastern Algarve — have developed genuine networks of long-term visitors who return year after year. Some parks have their own social committees that organise walks, car-shares to markets, and social evenings. Others are quieter. If community matters to you, ask before you book.

Practicalities

Healthcare for EU citizens is covered by the European Health Insurance Card. Non-EU visitors should ensure their motorhome insurance covers long stays in Portugal. Vehicle registration rules: a motorhome registered in another EU country can be driven in Portugal indefinitely. Tax residents are a different matter — if you intend to stay more than 183 days, get tax advice before you arrive.
